An oven exploded inside the kitchen at Alameda County’s Santa Rita jail Tuesday, critically injuring one person and injuring eight others, authorities said.
According to the Alameda County Fire Department, the explosion took place at around 11:42 a.m. at the massive facility that houses 4,000 inmates.
Alameda County Fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said the oven caught fire and then exploded.
Several emergency units were set to the scene to treat the injured. Four of the injured were taken to local hospitals while seven others were being treated in the jail’s infirmary.
