A man was being treated for moderate injuries after a fire and explosion destroyed a Hayward home early Friday, authorities said.
Fire Chief Scott Anderson said when the first arriving units got to the blaze around 5 a.m. on Fairview Ave. the home was completely engulfed in flames.
“We’ve gotten some reports of an explosion,” he told KTVU. “There is debris scattered all over the area.”
Neighbor Jay Jelincic said he was awakened by the blast.
“I heard a big boom and a crash,” he told KTVU. “I thought someone had thrown a rock through my window. I have a large plate glass window and it blew out.”
Firefighters found a man outside the burning home who was suffering from moderate injuries. He was transported to the hospital. His condition was not known.
The three fire engines that arrived on the scene were forced to make a defensive attack because of the intense flames. They were able to bring it under control in about 30 minutes.
The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
