A San Jose police officer was taken to the hospital and a driver was facing possible hit-and-run charges early Friday after a patrol car was rear-ended at a downtown stop sign.
Authorities told KTVU that the incident took place at the intersection of San Carlos Street and Almaden Blvd. at around 5:45 a.m.
The officer – a 13-year veteran — had stopped his patrol car at the intersection when it was slammed into by the driver of a Cadillac.
The impact of the crash stunned the officer and the driver attempted to flee the scene on foot.
Authorities told KTVU that a security guard from a nearby building gave chase and captured the driver, holding him until other police officers arrived.
The driver, who was handcuffed by police, and the officer were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation. The busy intersection would remain closed until police finish collecting evidence at the scene.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs played a role in this collision.
