With an important enrollment deadline just days away, volunteers around the Bay Area spent Saturday helping people sign up for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
Anyone who wants health insurance beginning on January 1st, 2014, must enroll by this Monday December 23rd.
To help with the cause, on Saturday a group of Cal students knocked on doors in West Berkeley urging those without health insurance to sign up for coverage through Covered California.
A dozen volunteers took part in what they call the “Covered Berkeley Brigade” and they spoke to several hundred people.
“We know that people are busy, people have a lot of obligations so we’re bringing it to them,” said UC Berkeley Sophomore Andrew Wong.
Dozens of people attended an enrollment event at the Vallejo Community Center Saturday, that was organized by SEIU United Health Care Workers West.
Rachel Jackson, a mother of two who is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, said she her part time job doesn’t provide health benefits. And while the cancer is in remission, Jackson hasn’t seen a doctor in several years.
“I need my preventative checkups,” Jackson said. “Just to make sure that if it does come back that they check it early.”
